InnoTrans Reflections by Chris Beavis, Tilt Consulting Managing Director

Attending with my fellow Tilt Consulting Director, Jason Groombridge and our Consultant Kelly Lo, who also represented the Young Rail Professionals, I walked through the expansive halls that hosted InnoTrans 2024 and I couldn’t help but reflect on how much the event has evolved over the years – and how I’ve evolved along with it. I have been visiting InnoTrans for many years, and I now consider myself a veteran attendee. This year’s exhibition reaffirmed what I’ve always known: the rail industry is not only still great but continues to be a vital pillar that supports society, the economy, and the well-being of millions of people around the globe.

 The continuing Importance of Rail

Rail transport remains one of the most sustainable, efficient, and economically valuable forms of mobility. Whether it’s moving goods across vast distances or providing affordable, eco-friendly travel options for passengers, the rail sector continues to add immense value to our daily lives. This year, it was particularly exciting to see innovations aimed at increasing sustainability, digitalisation, and efficiency, ensuring that rail will remain a key player in shaping the future of global transportation.

InnoTrans was a compelling reminder of how rail is not just about tracks and trains – it's about connecting people and economies. The industry drives growth, fosters innovation, and promotes sustainability, values that resonate now more than ever in a rapidly changing world.

 Energised by the Next Generation

One of the most encouraging sights at InnoTrans 2024 was the sheer number of young people excited to be there. Attending for the eighth time, I’ve seen how the industry has shifted to embrace youth, fostering new ideas and fresh perspectives. The enthusiasm these young professionals bring is contagious, and it fills me with optimism for the future of rail. It's clear that this next generation is not only ready to carry the torch but is also eager to innovate and challenge the status quo.

 The Power of Connection

InnoTrans is always buzzing with high-profile keynote speakers, flagship contract signings, and announcements that make industry headlines. While these moments are undoubtedly important, what really stood out to me this year, as it has in the past, was the power of face-to-face connections.

There’s something irreplaceable about the in-person conversations that take place, both planned and unplanned – whether it’s with an old colleague, a potential business partner, or a passionate industry newcomer. These moments are where the real magic happens. It's through these connections that collaborations are born, innovations take root, and long-term relationships are built.

I’ve learned that while the big announcements may grab the attention, it's these personal interactions that leave the most lasting impact. In the end, it’s the people that make InnoTrans what it is: a gathering of minds and hearts all working towards a shared goal of advancing the rail industry.

 Closing Thoughts

InnoTrans 2024 was yet another reminder of why I’ve stayed passionate about this industry for so long. It’s not just the technology or the deals—though those are impressive—but the people, the connections, and the shared vision of creating a better, more connected world. This year, like all the others, has left me energised and hopeful for what’s next in rail.

Here’s to many more years of innovation, collaboration, and connection in this ever-evolving industry!
